Eat, sleep, work, repeat. Ever feel like you live to work, rather than work to live?

I used to do anything my employer asked of me, working late into the night to complete extra projects well outside of my job description. After all, this was what I believed led to financial success. I thought if I do this for long enough, and save up enough money, one day I'll be rich and free to live as I please.

But after years of static titles and stagnant pay, the birth of my son brought everything into focus. I was spending some of my most valuable time working to build someone else's dream. I was trading all the experience and memories of my growing family for a little overtime pay at a below-average rate—why?

In this self-help career manual, I share what took me from burnout to becoming my boss's boss's boss, including:

  • How prioritizing your personal life over work can upgrade your career
  • My discoveries about the devastating effects of long-term stress on the brain (and how to use this same mechanism to your advantage)
  • The power of setting internal boundaries
  • The art of saying "no" without guilt (and why it helps everyone in the long-term)

Plus, enjoy this Exclusive Free Workbook:

🎁 A companion workbook to help you explore your motivations, determine your boundaries, and prioritize self-care.

If you have ever felt the weight of overstretched commitments, sacrificing precious time with loved ones or neglecting your own well-being in the relentless pursuit of success, you are not alone. It’s time to challenge the status quo, redefine your relationship with work and success, and quiet quit in order to fully live.

★★★★★

This book was a revelation for me. It put into words an idea that I'd struggled to articulate well: that standing up for a healthy work/life balance isn't 'slacking', and if done ethically, benefits both employees and employers. This should be essential reading for managers and employees alike.

A very clear, well-written book on how to not get overwhelmed with work

Over my 30-year career in government jobs (in the USAF, Veterans Hospital, and FDA) I learned an unsettling work reality: those that do poorly are “punished” with being given less work [people don’t want to depend upon or work with them] while those that have a reputation for doing good work are “rewarded” by being given yet more work. While this keeps us good workers very busy, it can quickly become overwhelming. Of necessity, I learned a number of tactics to cope with the escalating duties, many of which are very clearly laid out in this excellent book. What’s proposed here is truly effective. Plus, the points are proposed very realistically: noting the positives and negatives of various strategies plus their being options not necessarily applicable to all situations. The good news is that it is possible to fight back against the overwhelming tide of work to create a healthy balance in one’s life without necessarily being fired or overly offending one’s coworkers. I particularly liked the sections here on the following topics: how to tactfully say “no”; how to create and maintain healthy boundaries; what it really means to “work smarter”; the prioritization matrix for determining whether to “do, delegate, decide, or delete”; and the three key questions to answer before agreeing to a particular task. For anyone wanting to sort through their internal motivations for taking on extra work, this short book is a real eye-opener. Highly recommended!

Reclaim your time and energy

People experience a fundamental transformation when they discover the freedom to not handle everything alone. Eliminating extra pressures creates space to concentrate on important pursuits. Energy that was previously drained by constant work can be redirected to personal passions, relationships, and rest. And instead of making a person less efficient, this change of pace oftentimes makes them feel more purposeful because when life is more in balance, work is more purposeful as well. This book refutes the notion that this type of sacrifice needs to be made. It resists the notion that working more always results in greater achievement, and instead demonstrates how it really results in burnout and resentment.

"Quiet quitting" can improve your quality of life.

This is an interesting book that will help people who work too much and don't know why. The keys include setting boundaries of how much, and what sort of, work you will do. Also: setting a goal of spending a decided amount of quality time with family or on your passions; using computer programs and online services to "automate" a lot of what you may be doing; delegating work where possible; and other topics. The book itself sets an example of limiting work: it is short (92 pages) but packs all the information into a readable and well-organized form. One explanation to potential readers: the subtitle includes "ethical disengagement." This doesn't mean disengagement from your ethics. It means disengagement, of a type that is ethical, from some parts of your work.
